Music Analysis
Rent Strike- This song is just instrumental. There is a repetitive part in the music. There is a different feel to the jazz than the jazz from previous eras, it's kinda hard to put my finger on. I get the feeling that unlike the jazz from the 1950s (where the point in the music was to express feelings --in my opinion--) or the jazz from the 1970s (where the point was to ease attention away from certain feelings), the jazz from the 1990s was more about being heard and recognized. The music industry was becoming more diverse and in order to get attention, bands and genres of music had to adapt; though, not always for the better. This decade seemed more for the prosperity of oneself rather than the happiness or enjoyment of others.
Excursions- Looking solely at the lyrics of the song, you can tell that the song is about the group's journey to get to where they were. The are 'speaking the truth' and are taking actions to follow their dreams. There are mentions of hip hop and bebop which were other genres that were popular. Unlike other jazz songs, analyzed, this song has lyrics and a chorus. It basically has the whole 'song structure' of most modern songs. This song highlights hardships which could be representative of any of the wars, disasters, and other from the 1990s. The music part of this song is pretty consistent throughout the whole song, not varying much. There is the dominant beat and other background noise.
Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)- This song has two vocalists, a male and a female, showing harmony between the genders. The lyrics of this song are basically about these two people bragging about what they do, about how they fit into the music industry better than others. "I'm cool like dat". Honestly, this song has more of a rap feel to it, since 'rap' is mentioned a lot in the song. I guess this is because they are trying to blend two genres of music and Acid JAzz was the lovechild. There are many allusions in this song and, again, this song follows that song structure of the previously analyzed song. Although, this song does make a bit better use of instrumentation where it lacked in Excursions. I think people from this era were just trying to 'one up' each other. To show their fame or their advancement to others who aren't quite there. The era of egotism.
Again, these are all just my personal opinions. What I get from the music, not from extensive research. I might not even be correct, but I'm just expressing what I feel.
